Canonical issues are most frequent when a webpage/website has many URLs that contain the same or comparable information. A lack of correct redirects frequently causes them, but they can also be created by ecommerce search criteria and syndicating or distributing material on several sites.

A canonical issue happens when search engines find multiple URLs with the same or similar content on your website. This confuses search engines, as they can't determine which version to prioritize, leading to potential ranking problems.
For example, your site may be accessible at both www.example.com and example.com, or with and without "/index.html." If not managed properly, search engines might treat them as separate pages, splitting traffic and SEO value.
To fix this, use a canonical tag or set up redirects to tell search engines the preferred version. Solving canonical issues helps improve your site's SEO performance.

A canonical issue typically refers to problems related to the canonical tag in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and web development. The canonical tag (rel="canonical") is an HTML element that helps prevent duplicate content issues by specifying the preferred version of a webpage. Here’s a breakdown of what a canonical issue is and how to fix it:
What is a Canonical Issue?
Duplicate Content: When multiple URLs display the same or very similar content, search engines may struggle to decide which version to index and rank. This can dilute the ranking power of your content.
Improper Canonical Tags: If the canonical tag is set incorrectly (e.g., pointing to the wrong URL), it may lead search engines to index the wrong page.
Missing Canonical Tags: If a page has no canonical tag, search engines might assume that all versions of the page are equally valid, which can lead to confusion.

A Canonical issue occurs when multiple URLs have similar or duplicate content, causing search engines to struggle with identifying the preferred version. This can impact SEO rankings. Using canonical tags (rel="canonical") directs search engines to the correct URL.

Website having canonical issue work in www & nonwww both format. Which are treated as 2 different sites by Google, that's why we need to fix this issue before indexing.

If search engine indexes multiple versions of your websites main URL, that situation is called canonical URLs / canonical issue.
For example, SEOsurfer.in is a domain, if a search engine indexes its multiple version like mentioned below then it will be the canonical issue, which will cause duplicate content:
One of the major issue under this is famously known as WWW & NON-WWW duplicity, it happens when both versions of URLs have been indexed by the search engine:

To resolve it, we use redirection, especially the 301 redirections, also known as the permanent redirection.
301 redirection helps to transfer 100% value from one form to the another, which you’ve decided to keep on the search engine.

A canonical issue in SEO refers to a problem where search engines are confused about which URL should be considered the primary or "canonical" version of a page when multiple URLs contain similar or identical content. This confusion can lead to duplicate content issues, diluted search engine ranking, and wasted SEO effort.

It’s when Google sees duplicate versions of the same page. Fix it by setting canonical tags and using proper redirects.
