It depends on your personal needs and what you are going to host.
How much disk space and bandwidth do you need?
What are you going to host?

Yes you should. But depends on the site.
Also it is VERY important to choose quality provider. Having certain experience may tel that shared hosting is especially good at glowhost.com and marblehost.com.

I believe that depend on what which web project each has.
Even I do not see any sense of asking this question

Choosing a hosting plan depends upon the website which you wish to host. If you wish to host a Wordpress blog or forum or any small website, than you can consider a Shared hosting plan. If you wish to host some Audio/Video streaming website, than you should atleast consider a VPS.

Yes you should use, it depends on nature of sites.
Shared web hosting actually describes the basic concept of managed hosting, which is generally refers to dedicated servers. What this means is that the host maintains the server and associated hardware in their data center.

Those crontab -e commands are things you should run from an ssh command prompt. Not all shared hosting gives access to ssh.

Yes, shared hosting would be fine though I am not sure what are your specific features, and what host you prefer. It depends on the host and your goal.

What are your traffic needs for the site you will be creating ?
if its under 20K visits per month shared hosting is fine for you, also let us know how much space you will require to launch your site !

Well it really depends on the type of traffic you're thinking of getting. The thing about shared hosting is that if you get even a slight jump in traffic, your server my temporarily become unavailable (for example, if your article gets Digg'd and gets on front page). This would probably be the thing that you would be most worried about, since you WANT those jumps in traffic to your site. That's speaking in terms of a blog owner.
However, if it is a business-type website, where you just want to have a page to show what types of products/service you provide, I would personally go with shard hosting. Most hosts have pretty good online support 24/7 and if anything goes wrong, all you have to do is give them a call or message them at their helpdesk.

What is your website about? How much is your traffic?

Unless you answer what your hosting purposes are, we cant answer you with the right solution.
To say in general.
If you use shared web hosting you can use it for Less traffic, low resource intensive scripts, limited usage policy
If your site is going to get huge traffic (~ 150K visitors per month), high resource intensive scripts(for ex:wordpress multi site with 500 blogs), low restrictions on for what you are going use the space dedicated server is a good choice.
Not to metion there are also VPS, semi dedicated plans which you may search here for further reference.

It depends on your website, however, most websites are handled with shared hosting services.

Like it was stated earlier. It all depends on the type of website you are building.

I think that the choice of web hosting solution mainly depends on your personal needs..
There are many of them:
- shared;
- reseller;
- hybrid server;
- dedicated VPS;
- cloud hosting;
- colocation;
- Semi-dedicated server;
- dedicated server;
Etc.
