View Full Version : Would you rather have a good $5mo ecommerce website or a high-end $50mo one to start?
I always wonder why people choose these high end eCommerce sites to start. Open Cart is great and with cPanel hosting about $5/mo normally, right? Yet, Shopify runs about $50/mo, they both do almost the same thing.
Is it good marketing or worth the price?

I have always believed this. If you have a great product for a great price, you will do well. The market speaks for itself. I just find the higher end pricier options are a little easier to configure and the barrier to entry for a new user is much better. You can get just as much done, if not more on a cheaper platform, it will just take a little bit more work !

Very well executed hosting company. If you are technical, they can help, if you are not technical, they can help!

For starting out, a $5/month self-hosted option like OpenCart or WooCommerce is totally fine if you’re comfortable managing hosting and updates. The reason many people choose Shopify is mainly convenience, it handles hosting, security, payments, and maintenance for you. So it’s less about features and more about saving time and technical work. It really depends on whether you prefer control or simplicity.

It’s mostly about convenience. Shopify costs more because it handles everything for you, so you don’t need technical skills. OpenCart is cheaper but you have to manage hosting, setup, and issues yourself. So people are really paying to save time and avoid hassle.
