Hi,

looking at how sites handling group accommodation (like for families or groups of four) operate, I’ve got a question about the hosting side of things.

When traffic spikes during peak periods (holidays, promos, etc.), how do you usually handle that? Are we talking VPS, cloud setups, or straight to dedicated servers? I’m guessing you also need to account for heavy concurrent searches (lots of filters, real-time availability checks, that sort of thing).

Also, on the database side, do you tend to plan for horizontal scaling early on, or only once you hit a certain threshold?

Feels like a lot of projects underestimate the load when multiple users are searching at the same time with quite specific criteria.

Hi,

Just to add to the discussion, there’s also an interesting product angle that often gets overlooked when dealing with group accommodation demand.

For example, even on the user side, the intent can be very specific (like families of 4 trying to filter quickly for suitable options), which adds another layer of pressure on search + availability systems during peak traffic. The UX expectations are usually “instant and accurate”, which in practice is exactly where backend and database scaling decisions really show their impact.

As a concrete example of that kind of user journey, I recently came across this breakdown of the topic around find a 4-person hotel room in Paris (https://www.merveil-paris.com/en/blog/paris-hotels-groups-4-people), which illustrates well how narrow and high-intent these searches can be.

Curious to hear how others handle the balance between optimizing search performance vs. keeping availability data fully real-time under load.

For that kind of project, a scalable VPS setup is usually the best starting point. Heavy search traffic can strain databases, so caching and optimisation matter early on. Fresh Roasted Hosting is a solid option for this since their VPS plans scale nicely as traffic grows.

I’d go for scalable VPS setups. It lets you adjust resources quickly for traffic spikes and ensures smooth real-time operations. Plus, plan database scaling early to handle high demand effectively.
