Can someone explain to me what is the difference between adding simple keywords in Google AdWords or adding those keywords in square brackets [] or double quotation marks " " ?

The Google AdWords API lets developers build applications that interact directly with the AdWords platform. With these applications, advertisers and third parties can more efficiently and creatively manage their large or complex AdWords accounts and campaigns.

Those in the square brackets are exact match. In quotation marks are phrase match.
Examples:
[blue widget] - ad will show up only for: blue widget
"blue widget" - ad can show up for: blue widget, best blue widget, blue widget for pro...
blue widget - ad can show up for blue widget, best blue widget, red widget, widget...

There is also new match called modified broad where the word you place + before must be included. Example:
+best blue widget - ad will show up for: best widget, best red widget, but will not show up for: blue widget, widget

Thanks Tommy your answer was very helpful.

In the meantime I've found the same explanation for keyword matching options, in a Google adwords article, but there is no mention about the Modified Broad. is this something that was recently introduced?

With Google AdWords you create and display ads for your business quickly and easily. Your ads on Google and our advertising network - whatever your budget, you pay only when users click your ads. Just visit www.adwords.google.com to start. A day or two after you start, you get your keywords disabled, your ads are disapproved, and you're disappointed to pay $ 1 or $ 2 or $ 4 or more per click for popular search terms. Advertising AdWords is a spring bow Bronco.

Google Adwords is the system to assist you in marketing your products or services in the Google Search Engine via the use of placed text ads.

AdWords has everything you need to start. You can use external tools for finding or evaluating keywords, but optionally you can start an auto-bidding campaign, which will set the actual bids up automatically.

I like google adwords because it's very helpful to arrange the good suitable keywords for the site according to catogaries.
