I was planning on setting up a new website for my business but found that all the good domain names were already lent off. I wanted to know if it would make a difference if I took up a domain name with similar keywords but a different extension, instead of .com or .net. Will this affect the way in which the search engines will view the site? I really am very confused in this matter and would like your help. Please let me know any ideas or suggestions that you might have. I would be glad to learn from them.

Yes. If you take a .de domain your website is belonging to Germany.
But if you take a .org it is "international".
