Is it better to have a blog on the companies website or hosted separately?

Im wondering if people think it would be better to have a blog that is on the same site as the companies site or if it is better to be a different web address hosted somewhere else, i.e. wordpress.
My initial thoughts are that a blog is good for the companies main site because its a away increase content. In another sense, a blog ads opportunity to build another site that can link back to main site and also can prove to be an effective link exchange site (i.e. use blog to link to a site that links to our main companies site.)
Would be curious to see what people think and why.

I think either way works. Having a company blog is like opening another informal line communication between the company and its consumers. It is best to hear consumer comments directly in the blog than writing them somewhere where it cannot be addressed. Blog on your site will have more weightage. If your blog has interesting posts,then the visitor remember it or bookmark it for future use. It increase the traffic. It also build credibility for your website.

It all depends on your marketing perspectives but I guess adding a blog attached to the main domains would be a better idea because when people come visiting your homepage, after a few seconds they would spot the blog link and could check out the posts.

I guess based on responses, a blog connected directly to the main domain would work best, especially considering the visitors and giving them content to come back to.
