There are several techniques which are used to optimize a site in yahoo these are improve your yahoo search engine results. Currently Yahoo is using the Open Directory Project, or DMOZ, and Inktomi's base for ranking web pages. Open Directory Project is a large community of volunteer website editors on the Internet. Yahoo uses the relevancy of the title, description and category meta data from your web pages to determine whether to show your website in the search results. Yahoo also uses some of the technologies that it developed for determining which website to include in the search results.

Of all the differences between Yahoo! and Google, the most important one is the manner in which keywords in the title and in the URL are treated. If you have the keyword in these two places, then you can expect a top 10 place in Yahoo!. However, a title and an URL can't be unlimited and technically you can place no more than 3 or 4 keywords there.

Also, it is important if the keyword in the title and in the URL is in a basic form or if it is a derivative. For example, when searching for “fire”, URLs with “firewall” will also be displayed in Yahoo! but most likely in the second 100 results, while URLs with “fire” only are quite near to the top.

When we talk about search engine optimization, everyone is talking about optimizing for Google. Yes, Google may have the majority market share when it comes to search engines war, but we should not forget that Yahoo can deliver targeted traffic to your website too.

On-Site SEO: This is a key focus for Yahoo, its algorithm tends to focus on bold words and more meta related data, like titles, headers and descriptions. Yahoo likes long titles, 10-15 words is what is key. It also tend to target more guide related pages, so using keywords like “How to” are helpful.

Off-Site SEO: Yahoo has a different look on the value of this. They only look at backlinks as a whole number, rank of the source, quality, non of that matters to them. They are looking for the total number and whether or not a link is Dofollow or nofollow, they will ignore nofollow links so there is no balance there.

Quality of Content: This is the most important aspect according to Yahoo for ranking your site. Yahoo loves content and lots of it, the longer the post the better, this didn’t used to the be the case. The 2009 update showed that longer posts tend to rank better, from my experience an a post that reaches close to 1500 words or higher tends to do very well.

Keyword Stuffing: Now in Google there is a fairly strict limit of keywords you can have based on the amount of characters displayed on the page, anything that passes that line can be flagged and penalized. Yahoo however, is a language based search engine and targets keywords in a more broad spectrum, so they tolerate far more keywords on any one page. This is perfect for an experienced webmaster who knows how to use keywords effectively.

Click-Through Rank: This is kind of like Google’s PageRank, it counts click-throughs as votes almost, the more votes the better your rank. Theres a flip side to this as well, if your site has great content and no click-throughs then Yahoo see’s this page or website as worthless and won’t rank it very well. Good use of meta keywords, headers, titles, tags, etc. will fix this problem if you every have it, a well developed website usually won’t.

Website Age: Age is an important factor for Yahoo, there’s not much you can do about this other than wait or buy an old domain. Never the less its an important factor for ranking well within Yahoo. They see age as a credibility factor, a 2 year old site has much more authority than a 2 month old site, in most cases this should be the case.
