I've read that semi-dedicated just means that you're sharing resources with less people but in that case then we can say that it's still shared hosting.
So is semi-dedicated hosting better than a VPS that I keep on hearing about?

Whether to choose VPS Hosting or Semi Dedicated Hosting depends upon what are you planning to host/run on the server. Semi Dedicated servers are an ideal solution for Web hosting data such as resource intensive websites or business application software.

I assume that VPS hosting solution will be better choice than semi-dedicated server - but the choice really depends on your specific needs.

There are comaritavely less number of accounts created on the main node for Semi-Dedicated server as compared to VPS. So Semi-Dedicated server will have more amount of resources as compared to VPS and will be a better option.

Yes, you can call it a shared hosting. But, considering the number of people you are hosted with, its very much a dedicated one. But, it won't be a good choice to go for a semi-dedicated one.

You know, semi-dedicated server is a big shared hosting account, so I can agree with Rob here that VPS will be much better.
If there is a need in some kind of dedicated VPS (like a server with dedicated CPU and RAM) I recommend looking up the deals of hostv.com (http://www.hostv.com) as the one of the most prospective providers for services of this type.

Since VPS has had much better uptime, is much faster, and gives you much more freedom, since you can install any panel you want, it can be better option.
