If the server supports databases, web applications and payment gateway integration you can host the e-commerce applications.
I thought they can be the same? If you install Wordpress and Ecommerce plugin, that's an online store right? And you don't need any special hosting spec...

There is not much difference between E-commerce packages and Regular Hosting packages. But while selecting a host for E-commerce website, the end user has to be very careful because he is relying on the hosting provider for his Online business. So if even the website goes down due to Hosting provider fault, the end user is at loss and he has to suffer a lot in terms of money. So you should look for a Reliable and Secured hosting provider who has 99.9% Guaranteed uptime.

Establishment of an online business involves making many decisions. One of the key factors you should consider the construction and maintenance of your site. Effectively represented in the online business website. It is, therefore, that any decision is taken must be carefully weighed and examined. Even before the site up and running there are many challenges that present themselves to you, especially if you are a novice in the world of online trading.

Ecommerce hosting should provide you with merchant accounts, payment gateways and probably a built in shopping cart. You can get ecommerce applications to host on regular hosting as well, but ecommerce hosting should make it easy for newbies to start selling.

It is all about the provider's technologies and ability to support applications and other commercial stuff.
Also the reliability is important. Quality eCommerce hosting is possible at such providers as serverpoint.com (http://www.serverpoint.com) and hostingsource.com (http://www.hostingsource.com). These are what I know to be good.

Depends on what you are calling E-commerce hosting. Used to E-commerce hosting meant that you had a dedicated appliance type hosting from Miva Merchant or similar. Now any hosting account with a SSL can be a E-commerce site. There are still a lot of companies that put out true E-commerce platforms that meet PCI Compliance and such though. I think the simple answer to your question though is yes you can put in the plugin and a SSL and run it on any site that gives you a dedicated IP for the SSL.

for my information,
whether you chose e-commerce from vender or hosting yourself.
if from vendor, the only things you need to do is setup the page and content yourself. if hosting yourself, you may need find the right sources, shopping cart, payment method all by your end and maintain it.
so i would rather go for vendor e-commerce :)

The difference between conventional hosting and ecommerce hosting is that the latter comes pre-loaded with software such as a shopping cart, a catalog builder, a store designer, and a payment processor. If you are comfortable with purchasing and managing your own software, you can gain a substantial price advantage with conventional hosting.

Web-Hosting (https://www.esds.co.in/) is for hosting any project you make. You can make your own video sharing platform, search engine, online shop, etc. (assuming your plan offers enough functionality and resources). And E-Commerce platform is only for building online shops. Many major web-hosting companies have developed site builders in order to encourage people without web developing skills to go Online, because you can set up simple website without the need of programming with predefined functions and capabilities, and those sites can be anything you want as I mentioned above including online shops, hence all the functions for it: registering, shopping cart, check out, credit card processing, security, etc. To put it simple web-hosting is web-hosting + anything you want, e-commerce is web-hosting + online store, their specialty is in running online stores and developing functions needed for online stores.

Hosted vs Self Hosted E-Commerce Sites
What exactly is hosting?
Well, think about your e-commerce website like a house – hosting is the property that house sits on. It’s the server where all of the files that make up your e-commerce website live, and where they are accessed by anyone who visits your site. Everything that you see on the Internet is hosted somewhere.
The difference between hosted and self hosted has to do with who owns the software that runs your site.
With hosted e-commerce sites, the software and hosting are provided by the company. Generally, this gives you access to powerful tools to build your site, although you do not have access to the code your site is built on. Some examples of this are: Shopify, BigCommerce, PrestaShop, and Volusion.
With self hosted e-commerce sites, you pay a company to host software on their sites, but you then install and run the software. An example of this is installing and configuring WordPress as an e-commerce site on SiteGround (our partner), Magento, WooCommerce, or BlueHost. You have access to the code your site is built on, giving you greater control.
There are many pros and cons, but here’s the crux of the issue:
When choosing between hosted vs self hosted e-commerce sites, you’re basically choosing what level of control you want to have over your site, versus having someone else manage the details for you.

Generally there are some setting on server side which needs to be made to provide extra edge and make the whole process smooth. I think Ecommerce hosting provider use some custom servers layers with some extra setting which make the website load faster as compared to normal hosting

Well it doesn’t.
All web hosting works by utilizing computer resources (servers) host side and then basically selling usage of those resources to users. The more more resources on better computers you buy the more powerful your hosting will be.
Each host is given a unique IP address which may or may not be shared with other websites. Essential the more money you pay the more exclusive your IP will be.
Think of it as an apartment building. If your rent is cheap there is a good chance that you’llbe sharing your space with a lot of people. The more rent you pay the bigger place you will get until eventually you have your own address or IP.
