I have rewrite all dynamic urls of my site to dynamic urls and have deleted all the unwanted urls/pages and now there are thousand of 404 errors in my google wmt

I want to know is there any penalty for 404 and will it effect my site ranking , remember all those pages are unwanted all other pages are redirected poperly using 301 code

If there is any penalty should i redirect all 404 to main page

Hi Friend,
404 error pages don't really hurt your SEO, but there's definitely a lot you can miss out if you don't fix them. If you have backlinks pointing to pages on your website that return a 404, try to fix those backlinks and 301 redirect your broken URLs to relevant location.

If the error is arising due to a misspelled link from another domain, you can either ask the webmaster to update the link, or you can use the 301 redirection. If no relevant article is on your website related to the 404 link, simply let it be. Google will automatically de-index such pages eventually.

While Google has stated that simply having a broken link or two on your site won't affect your rankings in the search engine results pages (SERPs), the impact shows in other ways.

In theory, 404s have an impact on rankings. But not the rankings of a whole site. If a page returns a 404 error code, it means it doesn't exist, so Google and other search engines will not index it. ... However, it's not so much the actual 404 pages that hurt SEO, but the links that contain URLs pointing to the 404s.
