Backlink and keywords

I have recently been targeting a certain keyword, the number of backlinks to the page I have been promoting increased in web mas tools but it has dropped back a page in the serps I would have thought it would have improved not gone backwards, I’m hoping this is temporary any ideas guys?

You may need do more content improvement work, too many links can not help you too much! The quality ones are the best!
