Links with NO FOLLOW

Hi,
Can anyone of you tell me that whether links with nofollow attribute are counted as back links or not?
I think they are not counted.
But i wanted to confirm this with all of you.

According to my point of view no follow links are useless and wastage of time because They are meaningless in the sight of Google search engine.
