I would like to know what is best way to promote your web design portfolio
Give me some Tips please

You are entering in a cut-throat business, full (very full!) of poor incompetent amateurs who THINK they are at the top...
You are entering into a field that has been, for the last 10 years, damaged in credibility by those *** above, and clients are getting more and more suspicious.
You are entering in a field where potential "buyers" have been told, day after day, that anyone can build a "Facebook" website in a couple of weeks, for a couple of hundreds, and that they will make millions within a few months, and, unfortunately, THEY BELIEVE IT.
THAT, is the world you are getting into! 99.9% of incompetent graphists/coders, 99.9% of stupid and gullable buyers.

So... How do you make a stand?

1. Buy a clean and proper domain name.
2. Rent a clean LAMP server (the cheapests and most efficient)
3. Build your own, promotional website, with plenty of images of types of websites you could make. Nice graphics, effective navigation. Does not matter if they are for "nobody": they are samples.
4. ADVERTISE your skills on freelance websites (i.e. vWorker.com)

You say that your strength is back-end coding: fine! Do NOT try to get into "Design". You can only be good at one: coding OR graphics. Concentrate on coding. Find some good artists who can make graphics and join with them.
If you can manage to get a stunning graphist, and have the skills to make sites "to work", then you have a team that COULD go to the top.

i found that if you have a successful first client, referrals are the best way to market because the recommendations are concrete.
