If you have a lots of money to spare, host in india - as bandwidth there is costly. Else, US seems to be a popular option. hosting in US is not that bad and your users won't notice much difference in speed.

Hosting in US is not bad, but if you really care about speed, nothing like hosting in the same country. There is no comparison!

If you are looking for offshore hosting solution then make sure you deal with the web host that has it own data center, because most of the Indian hosting companies are reseller of US companies. And there are chances that your VPS account would be set up on the server which is located in the US.

Buying hosting services directly from the root web hosting providers and not from resellers also makes some sort of difference as reseller's profit is cut-off from the price.
