You can book a domain minimum for 1 year and maximum upto you.

it depend how long you register for the domain name. For TLD domain name you can register up to 10 years so you do not worry of domain expired .

Domain is renewable every year. Some registrar allows you to register domain in advance for a number of years while others don't and just set your domain to be automatically renewed.
