Google penalize your website for using bad techniques or we can say that spam techniques,

For some Google penalties check this link http://www.seochat.com/c/a/Google-Optimization-Help/Google-Penalties-and-How-To-Avoid-Them/1/

1. Sudden Google referral traffic drop
2. Huge differences in rankings if you query general search and a single database.
3 Your domain is not #1 for [yourdomain.com] search.
4. [site:yourdomain.com] returns 0 results

There are two kinds of penalties you can receive: algorithmic and manual.

Algorithmic means that your website conflicts with Google’s search engine algorithm wholly or partially.

A manual penalty arises when you’ve been engaging in a bad SEO activity that is against Google’s terms of service and somebody intimates Google about it. Examples include selling links on your site, inclusion of sneaky hidden text etc.
