KEI is calculated using two factors.

1. Number of searches made for a particular keyword
2. Number of competitor pages for that keyword

The formula for calculating KEI is = (volume of searches per day)^2/(total number of competitors)

For example, the keyword phrase "real estate", has a daily search volume of 11,039 (as per Wordtracker) and 490,000,000 competing web pages*. Using the KEI formula, the KEI for "real estate" is (11,039)^2/(490,000,000) = 0.25. Ideally, you want keywords with a KEI greater than 1.00.

A better keyword phrase would be "real estate property listings". Taking the daily search volume of 3,056 and the number of competing web pages of 305,000, the KEI would be (3,056)^2/(305,000) = 30.62. Excellent KEI!

In layman language it means if you target keywords which have more search volume and less competition then there are more chances of better ranking in short time. But in reality keywords have more search volume often have high competition.

Keyword Effectiveness Index or KEI is a measure to find the effectiveness of keywords in the search engines. It is calculated by dividing the total number of webpages with the total number of searches for a particular keyword.
KEI = 130000/380 = 342.10.

What a KEI actually does is give you an idea whether a term is worth using. However, the KEI factor is not a “set-in-stone” formula. The numbers are subject to change depending on the words you’re looking for. For instance, some terms might be combined, while others might not. As well, search results can change because an extra word in the term turns on a filter.

Keyword effective index is calculated on the basis that online searches.
