301 redirects are search engine friendly.
Google prefers 301 redirects as,
-They are the most widely supported among search engines
-Pass maximum of link juice (ranking power) to the redirected page
-Link weight from a 301 redirect does not change over time.

No, Redirection is method of forwarding one URL to a different URL. There are three main kinds of redirects online; 301, 302 and Meta refresh. 301 redirects does not effect to SEO and Google prefer 301 redirection for website.

301 redirection is considered as a Search Engine friendly redirection. If you go with 301 redirection then you wont loose your SEO work done for that particular URL. So I suggest everyone to use 301 redirection and 404 for the pages which currently not available on your website.
