I have a website that I am running for about a year now. But, I am not in the habit of updating its content. I know that it is very important to update the content in a site. Can anyone please tell me how often I need to update the content in a site? Is it necessary for me to update the content in the first place? Will it help me in anyway? I want help from someone regarding this. Can anyone help me? I want to know about the various advantages and the disadvantages of updating the content in the website. Do you know whether there are any disadvantages of it? If you know, please inform me.

I think unique content is always helpful.

Yup , I only upgrade once a mth sometimes quarterly. But do make sure your existing content is interesting and unique.
Otherwise you may treat updating your site like your weekly routine programmed

I had a site go down in pagerank just because it hadn't been updated in two months. I would say monthly is a good call, at the very least.

Sometimes real life's commitment make you go hard and difficult for updating regularly. The best option is update monthly or monitor the awstat weekly.

Even I update my blog two week once, yet I have a good traffic as well :) so even if you update your content regularly but not interesting enough and the result is same as well...

Updating content can definitely help, but it's not always necessary. Many sites are not updated on a regular basis as for some sites it is not necessary from a usability point of view. These sites still rank. In fact, the majority of non-news sites aren't updated much. If there are ways you can regularly update your content that doesn't cause a problem for visitors then it is worth doing, but it is not the be-all and end-all of website's ranking.

Make sure the content on your site reflects the present day. If you have a page promoting your book, and it has a press release that reflects last year's accomplishments but nothing current, readers will wonder how often you check your site. Readers will also be less likely to contact you if your site looks outdated.
