How effective is Google's Webmasters tool?

Hello dears,

I have been thinking of using Google's webmasters tool for my websites. However, to verify as site owner I need to download an html & upload to my site.
Wanted to know if adding the html has any short-term or long term drawbacks.
Please share your experience.

Webmaster tools is good to use, most important thing why I use it is to check for non-found urls that google wants to crawl (and then put a redirect in my .htaccess file to the correct page). It also gives you good information about sites linking to your site.

Your question should ideally be, whether there is any bad effects in confirming the ownership of a site to Google.

First, I would recommend you use a professional developer if you are not a great developer. The reason why I say that (and not meaning to put you down), but research and experience is critical. If you're bouncing EVERYTHING off of Google, you only pleased them and you may not have a user friendly website. Use them to validate things, yes...but don't use them as the end all.
