Both are a great source of traffic and backlinks as long as you maintain quality in your content.

Post the panda update many article directories like Ezine got affected due to presence of duplicate content and that is why I am dismissive about article marketing.

Both give benefits but to take benefit from these two techniques you have to submit unique and informative content that means quality content every time. Never use one article in different article submission websites or in different blogs. Google gives more important to quality content and it hates duplicate content so while keeps article submission or blog submission in mind these two points.
