Normal SEO activity is primary part of SEO. If you done accurate Normal SEO like perfect on page & off page, In off page such as directory, social bookmarking, article, press release, forum, blog, etc. after that you try advance SEO. Now a days social media is more effective activities to generating more traffic.

While normal SEO activities bring in traffic it is also important to consider that SEO tactics are constantly changing. What was considered normal and effective last year may not have the same level of benefits this year. Everyone also has a varied opinion. Some may think social bookmarking has good value and others will tell you Google's Panda update minimized its' effectiveness and now social media is the better market and where you should now put your efforts. The best thing you can do is to stay active with your research. You may not be able to stay ahead of the game but with weekly outreach and research you can stay in it.

You can’t categorize SEO as ‘normal’ or ‘extraordinary’.

Although trends come and die, basic on page(great content, page loading speed, meta tags etc..) and off page techniques (blogging, guest blogging, social networking etc..) remain the same.

You just need to be consistent and follow SEO techniques ‘more’ religiously.
