It's actually not so easy to do, Joomla doesn't have some built in tool to upgrade, you basically have to migrate to the newer version, but there are extensions that do this job well. CMS2CMS is the easiest one (in my book), but mind that some of the extensions can be unsupported in 2.5. See the video tut with more details:
