There are three major types – “True” duplicates which mirror another site’s content in every way except for the URL. “Near” duplicates which are almost identical content, but some aspects of the page have been changed, like the header, perhaps the order of the content and such, but the differences are very small. And “Cross-Domain” duplicates – where two websites share the exact same content. Even if you legally syndicate information from another website, you can still be penalized.

There’s also WWW versus no-WWW duplicate content. This is usually brought on by links to your site from things like social media and other websites, where the URL could contain the WWW or not. In some cases, Googlebot mistakenly views these as two different sites rather than one and the same.

How Do I Fix Duplicates?

The fastest way to fix duplicate content is to simply remove it. If it isn’t helpful to your site and isn’t bringing you traffic or sales, then it might as well be gone. Google will get the hint when it keeps hitting a 404 Not Found page and remove the duplicate from its index.

Another option is the 301 redirect. This is a good choice if your duplicate content has inbound links to it already. Visitors will be redirected to the new page, and search engine “clout” will pass on from those inbound links to your redirected page.

what can create duplicate content:

canonical issues (www and non-www version);
pagination when different pages have identical titles and meta description;
various versions of the home page (e.g. www.site.com and www.site.com/index.php);
incorrect internal navigation creating several URLs to one and the same page

There are only few free tools available that can be of much help identifying your site duplicate content:

1. Duplicate content tool estimates the following:

www and non-www header response;
Google cache check;
Similarity check;
Default page check;
404 header response;
PageRank dispersion check

The quickest way to fix duplicate content is to simply eliminate it. If it is not employed to your website & is not providing you visitors or revenue, then it might as well be gone. Google will get the tip when it keeps hitting a "404 Page Not Found" & eliminate the repeat from its index.
