Virtual Web Servers can be created by server administrators through server virtualization technique which involves dividing a physical server into multiple isolated virtual environments using specific software application. Such virtual environments are known as virtual servers or private servers. In server virtualization, the server resources, such as number and identity of individual physical servers, processors, operating systems etc., are hidden or masked from server users.

A virtual server (usually a web server) shares computer resources with other virtual servers. Instead of requiring a separate computer for each server, dozens of virtual servers can co-reside on the same computer. Virtual Web servers are a popular way of providing low cost web hosting services where each hosted website behaves as if it is being served by a dedicated server.

The performance of the website is not affected and website owners can use and administer one’s virtual server as if having complete control on the server. The user of a virtual server not only obtains specific domain name and IP address for the website but can also administer personal file directories, add e-mail accounts and address assignments, manage their own logs and statistics analysis, maintain passwords and more. However, excess of virtual servers on a single computer or hogging of resources by one virtual server can result in low performance and slow loading of web pages.

Windows Virtual Servers developed by Microsoft is a server virtualization solution which offers broader support and regular updates. It facilitates the creation of virtual machines on Windows operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2003. Even though expensive, there are certain advantages of Windows virtual server hosting such as Windows virtual servers supports Microsoft SQL or Microsoft Access database. It also has the ability to remotely access your desktop through an easy to configure GUI that will let you manage tasks even when you are not at your computer.
