Back links(inbound links) are those links which are pointing to your website from other sites and external links(outbound kinks) are those links which are pointing to other site from your website.

A backlink is that link which is linked to our website from another website and it is also known as incoming link and inbound link.

The external link is that link which is linked to another website from our website and it is also known as outbound link and outgoing link.

The amount of backlink is bigger than external link because it is shared link juice of another website to our website which is very helpful to increase ranking on search engine.

Here's your answer. About the number of backlinks that you're going to make, it's true that it's good to have a lot of links pointing to your site, but you shouldn't try and game the system by creating a lot of them at a time. Google doesn't like link spammers one bit. Yes, they may work, but they're not going to work in a long-term sense. You should let the people create those inbound links if you really have great content in your site.

Backlinks are the links that make the visitors come to your site from other pages/sites. External links are the links present in your pages that take the visitors away from that page.

Simple way of putting it....

backlink = inbound link to your site.
external link = outbound link on your web page to another website's web page.

Backlinks may also be referred as inbound links as they are links that point to your domain from external webpages. External links are outbound links that usually point outward from your domain to other external domains. Too many external links are harmful as they take away all the link juice from your webpages.
