How many character in Meta description?

How many characters does Google recommend in the Meta description? I have used more than 226 characters in Meta description for every pages in the site. Is really Meta description can affect on your site keywords ranking? Please give me suggestion, how many characters, I should use in Meta description?

Really? Then that's cool. But I think what the others here are saying the safe limit so that their descriptions have a smaller chance of being terminated by an ellipsis.
