search engine optimization and search engine marketing are both marketing techniques. SEO is the process of improving a web site’s rankings in search results of search engines. Whereas SEM involves driving website traffic via paid advertising, such as PPC ads. SEO helps improve organic search results while SEM focuses more on advertising.

Search engine optimization affects are known as organic search results because they are affected through the content of a website and how that content is indexed by the search engine algorithm. Many variables that search engine optimization experts must worry about include keywords, page rank, link building and one way links and website organization. On the other hand,Search engine marketing promotes websites on search engines through paid avenues such as paid placement, paid inclusion and contextual advertising. In most definitions, the main
reason that search engine marketing differs from search engine optimization is that search engine marketing focuses on the paid aspects of gaining rank on a search engine.

Hello friends,

Search engine marketing (SEM) refers to the short text advertisements which generally appear at the top or down the right hand side of search engine results. These are often labelled as "sponsored Links" or "sponsored results" The main reason that search engine marketing differs from search engine optimization is that search engine marketing focuses on the paid aspects of gaining rank on a search engine. The main difference between search engine marketing and search engine optimization is the placement of websites that gain their ranking through search engine marketing techniques. These listings are known as paid listings and are not included with the organic listings in the center of the search engine page.

SEO stands for search engine optimization and SEM stands for search engine marketing.
the difference between them may be explained as:-
SEM is a broad term,it is everything that can be done to utilize the technology of search engine with the target of promoting the website and increasing its traffic.its "stickiness," and, in the case of sites that promote a business (or are a business), increase profits.
SEO, therefore, would be a subset of SEM.
No SEM campaign is complete without SEO. Moreover, since the purpose of SEO is to make the site better for both search engines and users, you may find that it will suffice on its own. In any case, the advantages of SEO over the other aspects of SEM make it clear that, even if you are going to spend additional money on advertising and paid placement, SEO must be your first step in promoting your site.

SEM and SEO both are used for website's promotion except from the fact that SEO focuses on the ranking, visibility and traffic related issues of the website and provides a free service whereas SEM is the technique which focuses on the advertisement of the website and that also on the payment basis.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is an umbrella term that describes the different methods you can use to make your Web site more visible on search engines so that you can drive more traffic to your site. SEM blends organic (i.e., free) search engine optimization (SEO) with paid search or pay-per-click (PPC) advertising to increase exposure for your Web site.
In the other hand Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results.

SMO and SEO both have their own significance and have their different roles in SEO. Social media is basically for retrieving traffic to our site and SEO is for search engine ranking.Major differences between both terms is the networking aspect like social media is heavily-reliant on networking and strong profiles, while SEO can be done without this.
