I think Canonical URL is a url that you want visitors to see. Generally it can be used to describe the homepage of the website. I have read something about the Canonical URL. When we redirect the www and non www version to one URL that is called canonical URL. It is very necessary to fix it otherwise Google consider two different domains are running with same content and then a website can penalize for the reason of duplicate content.

The search engine friendly URL that you want the search engines to treat as authoritative. In other words, a canonical URL is the URL that you want visitors to see.

Canonical URL indicates search engines to treat that URL as an authorative, this URL basically describe original page. If a search engine finds different URLS on the same page like with www or non www, they try to select the best URL that they think is the original one. Major search engine introduced canonical tag which specified search engine on which URL to consider as an original one and which one to ignore. If you have three different URL of the same page, you need to add the canonical tag to two duplicate URL with same content as of original one.

A canonical link element is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues by specifying the "canonical".
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/" />

The one authoritatively correct URL for a resource. When a resource can be accessed via multiple URLs, a canonical URL should be identified. All alias URLs for a resource should redirect to the canonical URL to enforce its authority.

Canonical issue like your website open with non www and www and /index.html but all have same content, so you should use 301 redirect other pages to www(.)domain(.)com

Canonical generally used when there are duplicate content like you have two pages in your websites whose content is same eg, http://mydomain.com/jeans.html and http://mydomain.com/apparel/jeans.html reaching to the exact same product page. There are 2 urls but they are reaching to same page, same content, google find duplicate content with 2 different urls and will penalize. Canonical urls are generally used to prevent this.

These are those errors which mostly find in URLS for example www.rizzwaa.com!/jeck=jom+hd.php
For these we should rewrite our link for the search engine’s friendly

Canonical URL is user friendly link which can easily view by every user and it is free form errors and easily cached by search engine.

When to Url's of a site present in search engine then it is called Canonical URL.For example 1 site indexed google with http://www.example.com and http://example.com.In this case both are separate url's and can be problem of duplication and visitor diversion into 2 sites instead 1 site.

Canonical URL defined as the preferred URL for the page content to be indexed in the Major Search Engines. Canonical URL is used by the Major Search Engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and etc.... Many websites have two or more links of the same content with different parameter.
