If you want to get links from web designers who charge high rates then W3C validation is important to SEO, otherwise it has little direct importance outside of ensuring proper rendering to end users. When one visits Amazon.com or Google or Yahoo! (or just about any billion Dollar+ internet company) they will find a website that doesn’t validate. Why is that?

W3C validation is indirectly related to SEO and does not affect SERP’s ranking directly. Since, W3C validation means free from all code errors, it increases -

- the visibility of a website on other browsers
- credibility of your website

Validation makes your website compatible with other portable devices and devices for physically impaired people. Thus, W3C validation impact your website's rankings indirectly.
