Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is a system used by Google and other major search engines (Update: read here, thanks for the Tweets, guys) The contents of a webpage are crawled by a search engine and the most common words and phrases are collated and identified as the keywords for the page. LSI looks for synonyms related to the title of your page.

LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing is used in Internet marketing which enables search engines to look not only for keywords but also for words which are close in meaning to keywords and phrases.

Search engines make use of LSI and LSA to ensure that the search results produced are as closely related to the searched term as possible. It ensures that content is related and every word is somehow relevant to the topic.

The Latent Semantic Indexing information retrieval model builds upon the prior research in information retrieval and, using the singular value decomposition (SVD) to reduce the dimensions of the term-document space, attempts to solve the synonomy and polysemy problems that plague automatic information retrieval system
