Search Engine Optimisation, more commonly known as SEO is the process of getting your website listed at the top of search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN. SEO also helps in improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines via "natural" search results. Websites that appear on the first search engine results page for the targeted keywords can achieve significant traffic and maybe revenue. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engines. Search engine optimisation is one of the most cost-effective types of Internet marketing available and also one of the most useful tools used to improve the online business. However, there are some mistakes that usually web designers and web developers do while creating a website. They should avoid the following SEO mistakes to make a website SEO friendly:

Splash Pages: Splash page is a thing of the past, and should stay there. Not only is this bad for SEO, it’s also bad for your overall online success. Your homepage is probably your website’s highest ranking page and frequently crawled by search engine crawlers. If you use splash page as your home/landing page, your internal pages will not appear in a search engine index as they are not linked to your home page and crawlers will not get a proper path to follow them.

Flash Navigation: Many people make this mistake by using Flash in navigation. Yes, sometimes it looks good for the business but it can’t be seen by the search engines as they find links in Flash difficult to follow.

Image & Flash Content: Search engine crawlers can’t read content placed in images and flash. Don’t embed important content (such as keywords) in Flash and images.

AJAX Feature: Try to avoid AJAX feature as this is a big SEO mistake. As Ajax content is loaded dynamically, it is not spiderable or indexable by search engines. However, if you want to use AJAX in any case, try to keep navigations and main content out of AJAX feature so that they can be indexed properly by search engines.

Empty Image Alt Attribute: You should always describe your image in the alt attribute. The alt attribute is what describes your image to blind web crawlers. Search engines can’t see images, so your alt attribute is a factor in illustrating what your page is relevant for.

These things are the pillars of Search Engine Optimization and so to your web site’s success path. There are many other points that you should take under consideration while creating a website. Therefore, it is always advisable to hire an SEO expert who can work with designer and developers while creating a website to make it an SEO friendly website.

Is creating bulky images can hurt SEO of a site? I'm sure it can affect the speed of the site but not pretty sure if it has something to do on the SERP.
