There are about five or four keywords to target on. But it is better to have five keywords in each page.

Yes, 4 to 5 keywords for each webpage is fine.. if you've more keywords then try to merge them all by using long tail keywords or you can create separate page for rest keywords.

I dont believe it matters how many you actually have, i believe what matters is what the keywords actually stay, make it as relevant to your website as possible..

There is no set number as such. But it is recommended that you optimize each web-page for one primary and a few related keywords only.

I’d suggest that you target generic primary keywords via the home page and specific secondary keywords via respective sub-pages.

An example in point: If your website centres around insurance, best would be to optimize your home page for terms like general insurance, life insurance, insurance liability, insurance covers etc....And to make different web-pages for each type of insurance (one for motor insurance, one for health insurance, one for marine insurance etc...)

I think this is more personal prefrence but in my honest opinion I think you should have the main 4 for your index then the main 4 pages have the remaining keywords split up into groups on the other pages, then sub pages for those.

Also, where for example 'widgets' is one keyword. Are phrases such as 'widgets for sale' considered also to be one keyword.
