Linkrot, Link Rot, Link Decay, and Web Decay are all essentially about the same thing: the gradual loss of content that has been linked to. Websites that link to a lot of lost destinations may, in fact, be filtered or devalued by search engines because their editorial usefulness is algorithmically deemed unreliable or untrustworthy or unhelpful to user

Link decay is a term dedicated to the phenomenon of a link’s fading interest or disappearing of links with time.
With time, a link will start experiencing lesser clicks as users start losing interest in the topic.
As new trends start pouring in, webpages start disappearing from the web as a result of link decay.

Link decay also sounds like a new concept to most webmasters, but as a matter of fact it's an old one, and also has been part of the Page Rank algorithm for a long time now on the Internet. The easiest way to explain about that so anyone can also understand is that several of links you have is reducing with passing time, and losing value.

Link decay is the process of losing in the number of links over time
Example:
Suppose you have 500 links but after some time you have only 300 links so you lost 200 links.

‘Link decay’ is a relatively new term used, even though the concept is old. We build new links, but we lose links too. For instance, you might have been happy to find thousand backlinks to your website this week. However, you would get the shock of your life if you see that the number of links pointing to your site has been reduced to 800 this week. Where have they gone? Any of the following might have happened to them: devalued, de-indexed, change of content, link removal, expired, got pushed due to the presence of too much of links, etc. Link building is a never end process because of link decay. Even though certain links can bring more value over time, currently the life of the links is too short, especially after the Freshness update of Google.

Hi Friends

Link decay means that search engine remove content after short time when content is UN- necessary. In some of the blogs sites, where the post goes to archive they remove the content or change the URL of the post to fit in archive. This can be considered as link decay.

Thanks and Regards
