If there is a canonical issue in the website then the respective URL will not get the exact benefits. As you know it mainly used to redirect without www urls to www url. After using cannonical tag you will get the benefit of combine traffic that is diverted to the 2 urls.

Conical is a issue on any url as a server error problem and this is wrong for your website.

Canonicalization is a process for converting data that has more than one possible representation into a “standard” canonical representation.

So, Canonical + URL (Uniform Resource Locator) = Duplicate Content = More supplemental results = less Google lovin’

Examples of Canonical URL’s are:

Example.com/

www.example.com
example.com/index.html
www.example.com/index.html

URL normalization (or URL canonicalization) is the process by which URLs are modified and standardized in a consistent manner. The goal of the normalization process is to transform a URL into a normalized or canonical URL so it is possible to determine if two syntactically different URLs may be equivalent.

Search engines employ URL normalization in order to assign importance to web pages and to reduce indexing of duplicate pages. Web crawlers perform URL normalization in order to avoid crawling the same resource more than once. Web browsers may perform normalization to determine if a link has been visited or to determine if a page has been cached.

Canonical links are called as preferred links. The search engines have to deal with duplicate content then they have to choose which link should be favored over all others that contain identical page content.

URL canonical is known as URL normalization. If your site has some canonical issues. Then the respective URL will not get the benefits. it is known as server error & it is not good for your site.

In the World Wide Web, a canonical name is synonymous to the host name of the computer or a network server. It is also canned a CNAME, which acts as a nickname or alias for the recorded host name of the domain. The domain name is not necessarily easy to remember, hence the use of more friendly words to describe it like the CNAME.

Canonical URL is the search engine friendly URL that you want the search engines to treat as authoritative. In other words, a canonical URL is the URL that you want visitors to see.
