I think by normal guestbook you mean a commenting system where visitors can leave comments on the posts you have made. Or may be you mean 'guest posts'. This means you find other blogs in your niche and make guest posts in them (with the approval of the blog owner of course) then you get back links to your website from that blog and high visibility, traffic and ranking (passing page rank and link juice).
