Link baiting is about writing content in a website, which arouses the interest and curiosity of others. It is such a content which other sites love to link because they feel that it should be linked and not because you are asking them to link it. Link bait helps SEO in many ways mainly by link building. Link bait helps to get more links to your website and it increases the chance of your website getting indexed by search engines.

Link bait is any content or feature, within a website, designed specifically to gain attention or encourage others to link to the website. Matt Cutts defines link bait as anything "interesting enough to catch people's attention." Link bait can be an extremely powerful form of marketing as it is viral in nature. The term often has a negative or dismissive connotation. The content for link baiting would be a text, image, audio or video clip and it interesting enough to catch people’s attention.

The term link bait, sometimes written as linkbait, refers to a placement on a website for the strict purpose of tempting other web pages to link to that website. All kinds of companies create calculators for specific purposes that become link bait.

Linkbaiting is the process of creating an interesting newsworthy topic keeping SEO techniques in mind and post it on popular social media channels. This content/ feature acts as a bait and encourages others to link to it. There is nothing unethical in it and hence Google won't penalize you for it.

A way to share and get attention of people on someone others interesting articles, pics, website, blogs or similar on your social page. For example, you like pic or video on a website and share it on your Facebook page. You read the interesting tweet and re-tweet it. Read the article/blog on newspaper site and share it on Digg or StumbleUpon.
