Spam is most often considered to be electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings. Some people define spam even more generally as any unsolicited email. However, if a long-lost brother finds your email address and sends you a message, this could hardly be called spam, even though it is unsolicited. Real spam is generally email advertising for some product sent to a mailing list or newsgroup.Spam is most often considered to be electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings. Email spam, also known as junk email or unsolicited bulk email (UBE), is a subset of electronic spam involving nearly identical messages sent to numerous recipients by email. Clicking on links in spam email may send users to phishing web sites or sites that are hosting Waldemar. Spam email may also include Waldemar as scripts or other executable file attachments. Definitions of spam usually include the aspects that email is unsolicited and sent in bulk.

Email spam has steadily grown since the early 1990s. Botnets, networks of virus-infected computers, are used to send about 80% of spam. Since the expense of the spam is borne mostly by the recipient, it is effectively postage due advertising.

If you're following ethical ways of email marketing then it's not spamming. I mean you should first create your list for email marketing then you should send them important emails only, do not send them email for affiliate marketing purpose only.

Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender.
Email spam targets individual users with direct mail messages. Email spam lists are often created by scanning Usenet postings, stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching the Web for addresses

The unsolicited and unintended messages to your INBOX is considered as SPAM. The spammer should send unsolicited email messages to bulk email accounts, the content should be containing marketing messages or false/unwanted messages etc.

There are well know spam databases, RBL's which block such spammers on internet. Also there are filter techniques and advanced softwares available on servers to prevent spammers.

More over these spammers apply spoofing techniques and the incoming emails should appears like that they are send from legitimate email addresses. To avoid email spoofing, the sender domain should include an SPF and DKIM records for the domain.

At its core, spam is unsolicited, irrelevant email, sent in bulk to a list of people. For example, let’s say you purchased a list of email addresses from a local business organization. On the surface, that list of addresses seems like it could contain some great prospects for your business, and you want to send them an email with a relevant offer they can’t refuse. But since those people didn’t give you explicit permission to contact them, sending an email to that list would be considered spam.

In layman’s terms, spamming can be defined as the flooding of the Internet with unsolicited or misguiding messages. Mostly, spam is used for commercial advertising, often for get-rich-quick schemes or for selling dubious products. But not always.

In the end, the term describes the aggressive means to promote the product rather than the product itself. So don’t make the mistake of believing that just because the product you are marketing is legitimate you couldn’t be guilty of spamming.

Spam is any kind of unwanted, unsolicited digital communication, often an email, that gets sent out in bulk. Spam is a huge waste of time and resources. The Internet service providers (ISP) carry and store the data. When hackers can’t steal data bandwidth from the ISPs, they steal it from individual users, hacking computers and enslaving them in a zombie botnet. Software providers invest resources creating email applications that try to filter most of the spam out. Consumers waste time sifting through whatever makes it past the spam filters.
