hello friends,
I am starting a site which will provide services like statcounter.com .i am hoping to get anywhere between 5-10000 members signup for the first month.
Is vps good for such site because i will be proving the services for free and so i want to keep the hosting bills to minimum.
i just need a host which does not cancel my account for high loads and which can provide almost 100% uptime.
what do u suggest.

nefertiti,

First of all, congratulations on the new site and I wish you much luck in your venture.

Now, as far as hosting options go, I am a little confused. I am going to assume that you mean you have done market research and estimate in good knowledge that you will be receiving 5 thousand to 10 thousand sign-ups in the first month.

If this is the case, then the next thing you need to look at is how many trackable hits do you estimate the average site will need stats for each month?

If each site averages 100 trackable hits per month, then you are looking at 50 thousand to 100 thousand unique hits per month, plus all of the users that look at your page WITHOUT signing up.

Even figuring your conversion rate at a VERY high 10 percent, that's another 45 thousand to 90 thousand unique hits.

At a top-end, that could put you at a total of almost a quarter million hits, most of which never actually travel to your site so they do not generate ad revenue.

The concept is still a feasible idea, and with a creative marketing campaign you still have quite a bit of room to get an edge on a market that isn't quite flooded yet, but now we are looking at a much higher usage than the numbers you've suggested.

I suggest finding a resourceful, informative host and discussing with them directly if they will be able to cater to your needs and for how much.

Really, I can't give you any advice because I don't know enough about your website.

Depending on how much information you are going to try to track and how resource-intensive your site will be to view, you might even need to go with a dedicated option.

If it's something really light, VPS or shared might work.

The latter depends on how supportive, well-maintained and responsible your host is, though.

Hope this has helped.

is that between 5 and ten thousand members or between 5k and 10k members?

I think you're going beyond the limits of a VPS if you're going to have that many users doing pretty much anything of substance.

You may want to consider going with a slower growth model and working your way up the ladder a bit, so you aren't hit with huge costs from the start.

I'd recommend you to start with your own server. Even you might not need one within the first month you would need to migrate later and this could bring some troubles.

My own server.Do u mean colocation.
Is colocation cheap. how much do you think will be the monthly cost of colocation from a decent web host.

My first preference is 100% uptime.

Hi there,

VPS's are a great deal for those looking for a middle between shared and dedicated hosting.

It works out great for those that outgrew shared hosting but are still yet on a limited budget.

With that kind of traffic, would hate to loose during transfers or what not. I suggest going with an affordable dedicated server.

I agree totally, you will be better off performance wise with a dedicated server.

Hi nefertiti,

Congratulations for such a project!

Man you surely need a good dedicated server for such huge traffic to be save from any fault of site down. But for this make sure that you do not prefer cheap one as the companies which offer cheap dedicated servers normally do not make it completely dedicated. They jut serve it like VPS and the only thing to say it a dedicated one is the lesser no of customers on that so if you are going for hi option make sure you do not suffer a harder time even to that of VPS.

I would recommend a dedicated server so you can grow.

It would be best to find a provider who offers both a variety of plans. This way you can start out with a VPS to keep initial costs low while still having dedicated resources and then move up to a dedicated as your resource needs grow.

If you just start your forum, you'll feel quite comfortable on a shared plan, before your needs grow significantly. Or semi-dedicated plans from JaguarPC.com or Webhostingbuzz.com could meet your requirements.

Semi-dedi can be good gor you. A2hosting.com offers them for nice prices and they also offer cheap VPSs starting from $17 per month.

I would also say go dedicated since the size of your site could grow a good bit. That will save you from some downtime and stress of moving things when it comes to that point

between 5-10000 members signup for the first month.
If 5 members signup, you only need a shared hosting.
but if 10000 members signup, I think you need a dedicated server. :)

hotpop, will you allow them to manage their web sites through your cpanel acount on shared web hosting? ;)
Try to answer this and you will understand a lot of things ;)

VPS may not be powerful enough to do all the reporting and stats, also there could be problems handling the traffic. If you are really serious about such a service, you must be ready to invest some money. Stats service is really resource intensive, it is not exactly something you would launch as an experiment.

I would start with shared web hosts. My favour is downtownhost, SteadFast or MediaLayer.
They are capable to handle 5x more traffic then 10.000 - 15.000 uniques monthly.
Later if you outgrow shared hosting, switch to good VPS (powervps) or Dedicated.
I know a couple companies that use VPS from powervps and act as host company.

VPS's are a reasonalbe choice except that there are certain issues that should be taken into consideration. For example as per the platform openVZ or XEN services such as iptables might not be available. This causes problems with most firewalls. Further certain control panels might not function correctly. All in all they are a valid choice provided that they are not mistaken for the equivalent of a dedicated server.

Try with dedicated server. You can check tit from godaddy or liquid web they are having the best price and 100% uptime

Do not go with dedicated or VPS just to go. Specify your exact needs and then decide

Slow and steady wins the race.
If you climb the ladder your bills also will climb like that.
If you want to hit 10K in a month prepared to pay that much.

I agree with you completely.
May need to think carefully before go for dedicated. :)

It's really difficult to have 10000 memeber signup, I'd say.
