While submitting your site to any directory you must see that your site must be optimised in the right way then it must be submitted to the appropriate category and you must always ensure that the page you are submitting your link to, must have high PR and should be related to the content of your site.

Most web directories don't send me any traffic, however it's always good to have a link back from a reputable directory, as it helps with search engine rankings...

It is often caused because most people submit the same titles and descriptions. They submit to the same category (that is right, if you are web hosting company you should submit to the hosting category) but the effect is that all directories has the same or very similar content. From this reason search engines rate the directories like low quality websites and they don't get too much search engine traffic (the most traffic they get is from site submitters but these people are looking for a backlink and are not interested in sites listed in the directory).

Some time ago I made an experiment. I tried to write unique title and site description for every directory I submited. The idea was to make the directory a little unique. And yes, after a few weeks I have seen some traffic from these directories. I was not too much visitors but more then before.

I have also seen a few directories which require larger description (250+ characters). They probably know that most submitters have default description text which is usually shorter and this way they must to write a few more words and make the description a little unique. This is maybe one of the ways to create quality directory.

Firt post seems to be made only for the signature showing.
But as far as I know links from the signatures are not indexed.
