Assessing the importance of HTML, it would be best to know what it is. It stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is the one central language that can read a web page and not have to worry about showing the code if done correctly. There is the question of why it is important to know it. It really comes down to the simple fact that they have to be known if those are going to be building web sites consistently. Any web site that is out there must have that knowledge in order to understand how it is structured and how it is put together.

HTML is the client side language to use for any web application. Whether, you are developing your application in java or PHP, it does not matter the front screen will be in HTML only. It does not mean that this is only language to design front screen, but it is most preferable and easy to use instead of any other client side.

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the primary building block of creating a web site. HTML is a very basic markup language and requires a memorization of a few dozen HTML commands that structure the look and layout of each of the web pages. Before writing any HTML code or designing your first web page, you must decide on an HTML editor or text editor such as Notepad, WordPad, and even Microsoft Word. Whatever editor you decide on using can change if it isn't working for you.

HTML defines a syntax, referred to as "the HTML syntax", that is mostly compatible with HTML4 and XHTML1 documents published on the Web. HTML and XHTML are defined in terms of a language and a serialization. The language defines the vocabulary of the elements and attributes, and their content model, i.e. which elements are permitted inside which other elements, which attributes are allowed on which element, along with the purpose and meaning of each element and attribute.

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the main markup language for creating web pages and other information that can be displayed in a web browser.
HTML is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags enclosed in angle brackets (like <html>), within the web page content. HTML tags most commonly come in pairs like <h1> and </h1>, although some tags represent empty elements and so are unpaired, for example <img>. The first tag in a pair is the start tag, and the second tag is the end tag (they are also called opening tags and closing tags). In between these tags web designers can add text, further tags, comments and other types of text-based content

Importance of HTML
HTML is the underlying language for every Web page.
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is to the Internet what moveable type was to early printing presses. Moveable type allowed printers control over the font size and typeface of their publications. HTML allows Web designers control over the size, color, font and positioning of text and graphics on their pages by the use of special instructions referred to as tags. When viewed with compatible browser software, the tags allow a page to be viewed on any computer, regardless of the operating system, in the same format the designer intended.

We can say that HTML is the default language program for web developers. It's easy and quite fast to implement this during the initial web development phase. While you're planning to introduce advance language programs of your website in the future, you now have a static website in place; thus getting inbound traffic.

Hi,
To all from this board,
HTML is important as the base language that css, javascript and php plug in to. It provides the content that css styles, javascript enhances and php links to a database and Java is a server-side language, not a web client language. There is a huge scope of the HTML in the professional world as this is the tool to create websites and programmes.

A major advantage of HTML is that it is free. You do not need any software for HTML, no plug-ins are needed and it means that you can save considerably on your website development cost. Even with open source content management systems, all the plug-ins that you may need are not always free

I find XHTML easier, I started learning that by myself and I got into a web design course at school and they were teaching HTML and I found it harder to use HTML since I know more about XHTML.

A good website starts life in the design stage. There are several aspects of the site that are formed at this stage, including among other things, layout, color, sound, content, functionality and maintainability. No reasonable person would start to build a house without designing it first, no reasonable website builders should begin construction without a design either. While I admit there may be a better chance of succeeding with the un-designed website than with the un-designed house, you are selling yourself short if you skip the design stage.
