I have seen a lot of requests for hosting accounts to host a YouTube-like types of sites, so the question is basically what types of servers are mostly used by hosts offering these plans: web servers or streaming media servers and what are the advantages of each of them?

Streaming Media Servers will be more effective in this case, allowing for better audio and video quality, but they are not cost-effective as they do not allow hosts to utilize existing infrastructure.
That's why the majority of hosts offering streaming via http server, I guess serverpoint.com as well, have seen it in your plans.

Moreover ServerPoint.com provides Windows Media Player, RealAudio/Video, Quicktime, MPEG, and others
(all via HTTP streaming) on their shared hosting. Guess there is no need to use a dedi in this case.
