e- commerce solution with customizable data base

I am in the process of planning to have a website designed that has the ability to add custom text and photos to an item. and then the itme gets purchased. the site will save the customized text and photos so that it can be accesed to make those modicifactions to the actual item the customer purchased.

I am looking for either a hosted e-commerce solution or software package that allows you to add fields to existing tables and additional tables to the database.

It seems that companies like yahoo, volusion, or Miva do not allow this.

The developmnet companies makeing proposals all want to make the e-commerce solution from scratch and charge several thousand dollars ( $3K-$4K) for that part of the development in addition to several thousand for the web program to make and save the customization. It seems to me like they are trying to reinvent the wheel.

One company said that if they can have access to the database, then they would not need to charge me for the e-commerce development.

I hope someone can give me some good recomendations.

I want to find an existing e-commerce software solution that allows you to make custom modifications to the program.

I do not want to build it from scratch.

Basically I when a customer slects an item, they add additional infomration to the item. What solution will allow me to modify their software so I can do that.

I think you should consult a web design company that can build ecommerce website for you and provide business database management solutions.

I have consulted a web design company.. infact I have gotten 30 + proposals. My big issue is I think that they are mostly full of it. They are telling me that it is impossible to use existing industry leading ecommerce platforms for the base of hte project and either modiy the existing tables or create new ones for the functions I want to develop that tie into the existing solution.

One company said to create the product customization wizard that I am looking for the cost is any where between $6-$8K USD. Then I said that was too much. Then they said if I remove the wozard function they want $3-$4K to make an ecommerce site with all the functions of Volusion or Miva.

I posted this forum to see if anyone can shed some light on the issue. Now after doing some research on my own. I have found a few that can. In fact Miva does allow you to make custom modules that plug into the ecommerce solution. I am still determining how much modification they allow to the data base.

Then there is another solution called aspdotnetstorefornt.com this one is alos super flexible and has the opeiton of buying the source code to modify.

If you do not watch some of the web development compnaies, they will really stick it to you.

I can name ione more company where it is possible to host eCommerce site - gazzin.com - they have good prices and many additional options, but I do not know if your requirements would be fully satisfied...

There are tons of free open source ecommerce softwares which you can customize to your needs. But obviously you need to customize it yourself or pay someone to do it, there is no free lunch.

Alternatively there are hosted ecommerce solutions, which will allow you to click and add products. They are easy to get started, but may not allow you much customizations and branding could be a problem.
