wow...How fast they are. Bret Taylor, the product manager siad
"We think maps can be useful and fun, so we've designed Google Maps to simplify how to get from point A to point B. Say you're looking for "hotels near LAX." With Google Maps you'll see nearby hotels plotted right on a crisp new map (we use new rendering methods to make them easier to read). Click and drag the map to view the adjacent area dynamically - there's no wait for a new image to download. Or get step-by-step directions to where you're headed. If a particular intersection on the route looks tricky, click on that step in the directions to see a magnified view. Play with the keyboard shortcuts (arrow keys to pan or the +/- keys to zoom in and out ) too. The tour shows you even more. Happy trails."

The site has really nice handling the way the map moves and centers but it doesn't seem that great for finding directions. http://www.mapquest.com/ is much easier to use.

I read that Google is doing 70-20-10 development meaning 70% of their business will be devoted towards their search engine stuff and 20% will be devoted to closely related stuff- like registering domains and 10% will be for totally new and different stuff.

Must be an interesting place to work...

When running a publicly traded company, they always have the need for innovation and launching new products. Of course a lot of stock holders would prefer they stick with the search engine business and just do that very well. Many a company has diversified so much in the past that they loose focus on the products that made them famous. By doing so, they may loose market share. It can happen very quickly in this age.

Best Wishes for a .Net Success!

In real life this doesn't help much belive me....once i was traveling for some business and i wanted to get the direction to a company, i tried following this map but i got lost....the thing is what you see on the map are just yellow lines with street names with doesn't help much.

Also google maps works badly for some small cities in some countries like russia for example.

But generally it is fun to use

What a great success google maps have become. I used to use mapquest and the day I saw google maps, I knew all other map sites will be out of business. My day doesn't go without checking something on google maps almost everyday.
