Local search is when a buyer submits geographically constrained searches and gets local results that are relevant to their local area based on a structured database of local business listings developed by the 3 major search engines.

A local search is performed when someone uses a local search engine to find products or services in their area. There are many local search engines that are used billions of times per day such as Google Maps, Yahoo Local, MSN Maps and Local.com.

Local search engine optimization is similar to SEO in that it is also a process affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine's unpaid results often referred to as "natural", "organic", or "earned" results

Local search is the use of specialized Internet search engines that allow users to submit geographically constrained searches against a structured database of local business listings. In other words, here the search engine provides results relevant to their local area based on the database of local business listings. Search engines provide different search results for different countries.

There are three definitions for local search I tend to use repeatedly when trying to explain it. Most of the time, people need to see all three of them before it makes sense:

Local search is any search aimed at finding something within a specific geographic area. Example: “hotel in downtown denver.”
Local search is seeking information online with the intention of making a transaction offline. Example: “atm denver tech center.”
Anything that you would traditionally look for in the printed yellow pages becomes a local search when it is conducted online. Example: “dry cleaner on colfax avenue.”

Local search marketing is all about putting your business on the map in local searches when customers are searching for a business like yours.
How Does Local Search Marketing Work?
To build a local search presence, you'll need to optimize your online information so that search engines place your business in the right searches (and so that consumers can easily find all the information they need in order to choose your business). To give yourself the best chance of showing up in the right searches, you'll need to tell search engines everything they need to know.

Local search is the use of specialized Internet search engines that allow users to submit geographically constrained searches against a structured database of local business listings. Typical local search queries include not only information about "what" the site visitor is searching for (such as keywords, a business category, or the name of a consumer product) but also "where" information, such as a street address, city name, postal code, or geographic coordinates like latitude and longitude.
