That's because advertisement exaggerates to make a sale. Having an honest, down-to-earth business personality can help companies build rapport with today's customers.

I think customers are wiser nowadays, they perfectly know if the company is credible enough or just a dupe.

Online reputation is not only important for the hosting business in its current state - its crucial! Building it and maintaining it can be the difference that will either get you going or ruin your business.
However I don't believe in using a partner to build this reputation. Sure, you can go ahead, get your site listed on loads of places and gain some sales from that. However the after sale process is what builds or destroys your online company image. Clients are becoming more and more educated and sensible when it comes to choosing your host. Host hopping has been made so easy that a poor customer service will surely see your customers flying away from your nest much faster than they arrived. This parting is the least of your problems if you encounter such an angry user. Some dissatisfied people will do everything in their power to ruin your reputation and they have plenty of platforms to express their negative feelings. Social media websites, forums, blogs, review sites, if one decides to spare some time your company can appear in more negative conversations than you can imagine...

Companies paying for building an online reputation care too much for Customer Acquisition and not enough on Customer Retention. Your swift and helpful service and stable environment is the only reputation-builder you need. Put your efforts in perfecting your product and positive reactions will come naturally. Fail to do so and you will soon feel the results. From the customer point of view, you can gain interest in a company from hosting directories but before you jump in such an important venture, simply do your homework - checking various forums, review sites, speaking with a rep via live chat/phone will easily show you if that company simply paid someone to list them just to gain your attention or they are in it for the long run
