PHP is our company favorite, best for Linux Hosting, easy to use and flexible for modifications. Large communities, many helpful material and something key for me - PHP based websites tend to load faster, because of the simplicity of the program language.
ASP.net is the Windows response to that and it logically requires Windows Hosting. The resources and hosting itself are much much more expensive, but in terms of security and stability it might prove to be the better choise.

Some other involved criterion would be that you can use PHP on Windows Hosting but the opposite is impossible. Also, in terms of databases, PHP uses the free MySQL and ASP.net works with MsSQL which again is purchased from Microsoft.

In the eyes of the programmers I think that most of them prefer PHP, because its quite similar to C++, whereas ASP more resembles Microsoft Visual Basic.

I think the linux platform is key here. php will only run on Linux and this is far and away the most availbale web server platform

For me it is PHP. It is really easy to understand and use (my opinion). I enjoy using it. Though I think the other one you mentioned is good for security if am not mistaken. Though i suggest that you use PHP.
