Simply put, the breadcrumbs are the visual structure of the website. So each page you go in, you see the way you got there and can return easily on each of the previous pages. Suitable for multi-level websites to ease the user experience.

And yes, they do hold an SEO value. You can use important keywords in your breadcrumbs and that will highlight them for the search engines and also create an on-page emphasis of the anchor text. By doing that you also add more relevance to the content inside the page.

Still, be aware that the breadcrumbs are primary for helping the user and should not be exploited. Google actually adds breadcrumbs to many multi-level sites, so you don't have to go through the whole process.

A type of text-based Web site navigation that breaks the site into links of categories and sub-categories allowing major categories of information to be linked in a range of sequential order. Breadcrumb navigation is displayed to the user, so they can easily see exactly where that Web page is located within the Web site. While many types of Web sites use a breadcrumb navigation, it is becoming increasingly common for electronic commerce Web sites to display categories of products in this way.

A “breadcrumb” is a type of secondary navigation scheme that reveals the user’s location in a website or Web application. The term comes from the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale in which the two title children drop breadcrumbs to form a trail back to their home. Just like in the tale, breadcrumbs in real-world applications offer users a way to trace the path back to their original landing point.

They provide another mechanism to highlight important keywords for the search engines to note in your navigation.
They add content relevancy to your pages because they are all now keyword-intensive.
They provide added on-page SEO emphasis that highlights specific anchor text rich linking to internal pages.
