Professionals have different views about these two languages. Actually it depends on their experience. Some like ASP because they always use it and some like PHP because they have experience of using it. Its all about interest. The only fact which I understand is that PHP is open source and no license required that's why majority of people use it.

It depends on the requirement or what you are developing. Both the technologies have their own features, advantages & disadvantages.

It really depends on your requirement and budget. If you have limited budget go for PHP because it is open source technology and the code is available free of cost. Whereas asp.net is much expensive but offers more security and reliability.

You can have great success and great performance either way. MSDN runs off of ASP.NET so you know it can perform well. PHP runs a lot of the top websites in the world. The same can be said of the databases as well. You really need to choose based upon your skills, the skills of your team, possible specific features that you need/want that one does better than the other, and even the servers that you want to run this site.
If I were building it, I would lean towards PHP because probably everything you want to do has been done before (with code examples how) and because hosting is so much easier to get (and cheaper because you don't have the licensing issues to deal with compared to Windows hosting). For the same reason, I would choose MySQL as well. It is a great database platform and the price is right.

PHP is easy to learn for the web designer because It has html and css basic knowledge.

PHP Is definitely better with comparing the neat code generation. ASP.net sometime generates unnecessary code....

PHP is basically open source. It hosted on Linux server. Linux hosting is very cheap to today. 90% developer like to work with php. ASP.NET using for highly database driven websites. And window hosting is to much costly as compare to linux

PHP is the best for making website which have less cost, while .net is costly to make a site. The site made in .net is more secure than site made in php. Security is also good in PHP, but not as much as in .net.

Regarding cost and support, since PHP is open source and commonly runs on an open source platform, LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), PHP wins over ASP.net for providing the most cost effective solution and providing a large amount of resources and support.

PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) and ASP (Active Server Pages) are the two most popular means for building web applications. PHP is best in terms of price, speed, platform compatibility, and the size and responsiveness of its developer community.

It depends on budget and time. PHP will develop sort of time but asp will take little more time but reliable.

PHP is best because it is easy to learn and implementing. I always like to make websites in PHP. It is also very demanding.
